Claude vs Copilot for Excel, Word and PowerPoint (2026)

Claude vs Microsoft 365 Copilot for office work: what each documents in Excel, Word and PowerPoint, Cowork, data access, admin controls and dated prices, plus a free three-task test kit.

Claude and Microsoft 365 Copilot both work inside Excel, Word and PowerPoint, and both have an agent that runs multi-step tasks across files. Copilot fits firms that need Microsoft 365 permissions, Purview labels and audit to cover every AI action. Claude fits people who want one assistant carrying context across open Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook files, with finance connectors and reusable Skills, and who can accept add-ins that sit outside Microsoft's compliance stack. The two also overlap more than the name suggests: Microsoft built Copilot Cowork on the technology behind Claude Cowork.

Documentation review, not a hands-on test. I could not sign in to Claude or Microsoft 365 Copilot for this page, so nothing below comes from running either product. Everything is from the vendors' official documentation, help-centre pages, pricing pages and announcements, all checked on 1 November 2026 (sources at the end). What I did build is a three-task test kit you can run in both yourself.

Developer tools (Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot) are a different comparison and not covered here.

What each product is

Claude comes as add-ins plus two other pieces. One Microsoft Marketplace (AppSource) listing, Claude for Microsoft 365, covers the Excel, PowerPoint and Word add-ins and describes itself as generally available on all paid Claude plans; each app also has its own listing, such as Claude by Anthropic for Excel and Claude by Anthropic for Word. Claude for Outlook has its own Marketplace listing and is labelled beta on all paid plans. The add-ins come with every paid plan, not Free, and run in Office on the web, Windows (Microsoft 365 builds) and Mac, but not on iPad, Android or Office 2016/2019 perpetual licences. Admins can route them through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, Azure AI Foundry or an LLM gateway instead of a Claude account. Claude Cowork is the agent: a desktop app (macOS, Windows and Linux, labelled beta) on all paid plans, plus web and mobile on most. The Microsoft 365 connector lets Claude search SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook and Teams from claude.ai or Cowork on every plan including Free, after a one-time consent from a Microsoft Entra Global Administrator. Write tools (email, calendar, files, Teams messages) need separate admin approval.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is built into the Office apps rather than installed. Copilot Chat is included with eligible Microsoft 365 plans; Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams needs a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence; Copilot Cowork needs that licence and then bills on usage. Its advantage is grounding: it reaches mail, chats, meetings and files through Microsoft Graph and shows only what the user already has at least view permission to.

Copilot Cowork is built on Claude

On 9 March 2026 Microsoft wrote: "Working closely with Anthropic, we have integrated the technology behind Claude Cowork into Microsoft 365 Copilot" (Microsoft 365 blog). Copilot Cowork reached the Frontier programme on 30 March and general availability on 16 June 2026, when Microsoft wrote that it "runs on Anthropic models, including Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 4.6".

So "Copilot Cowork vs Claude Cowork" is less a model contest than a question of where the agent runs and whose controls apply:

Local sessions are captured only where an organisation has enabled HIPAA and the Compliance API, and the API returns the most recent 30 days (Cowork help)

Microsoft also publishes its own Compare Copilot vs. Claude Enterprise page, headed "Not all AI is built for work". It says Claude "did not enforce Microsoft Purview policies", "did not work in Teams", and that the Claude add-ins did not find the content or use the organisation's template in its runs. Read it as a competitor's marketing. Each footnote reads "Simulated video captured on" a date between 4/24/2026 and 6/9/2026, followed by "Sequences shortened for demonstration purposes only", and the page does not publish the files or the number of runs behind each comparison. That is why a test on your own files is worth more than either vendor's claims.

Excel: Claude for Excel vs Copilot in Excel

What Claude documents. Answers about the workbook come with clickable cell-level citations. It changes assumptions while keeping formula relationships intact, traces errors such as #REF! to their root cause, populates templates or builds models, and can sort, filter, edit PivotTables, apply conditional formatting and add validation dropdowns. It warns before overwriting data. Finance connectors (S&P Global, LSEG, Daloopa) pull outside data in. Anthropic lists data tables and macros/VBA as unsupported.

What Microsoft documents. Copilot in Excel opens in edit mode by default, with a plan mode that proposes steps before changing anything and a chat-only mode that changes nothing. It creates and edits charts, PivotTables and shapes, applies formulas across sheets, imports data from other workbooks and searches the web with citations. Edit, plan and chat modes all work on Windows, Mac and the web.

What the documentation emphasises. Claude's pages are written for modellers: citations, flexing assumptions without breaking formulas, and carrying a model's logic into a deck or memo. Microsoft's pages emphasise that the workbook, its sharing permissions and the AI activity stay inside Microsoft 365. Neither tells you which gets your variance analysis right; Task 1 in the kit does. For Copilot on its own, see Microsoft Copilot for Excel; for the wider field, best AI for Excel.

Q3 P&L sheet from the Excel test task: budget and actual by region with empty variance columns Task 1 workbook, rendered from the file's values as Excel calculates them on open. Two data problems are hidden in it; the answer key is a separate file in the kit. Illustrative example · Fictional company and sample data.

Word: Claude for Word vs Copilot in Word

What Claude documents. Edits land only in the selected passage and inherit the surrounding styles and numbering. In tracked-changes mode every edit is a native revision you accept or reject in Word's review pane. Claude can work through comment threads one by one, edit the anchored text and reply saying what it changed, and it can summarise a counterparty's redlines by severity. It reads text, comments, tracked changes, footnotes and tables in the open document only, and does not open legacy .doc files.

What Microsoft documents. Copilot in Word opens with edit mode on and works "in the original file with clearer, reviewable changes instead of creating extra copies". In a shared document it shows a preview of suggested changes in chat first, and nothing is added until you approve. Chat-only mode answers questions without touching the file.

What the documentation emphasises. Claude's pages go into more detail on redlining and comment-driven review. Microsoft's emphasise drafting from mail, meetings and files across the tenant through Graph. Task 2 in the kit tests the redlining side. Microsoft's own steps are in how to use Copilot in Word, and the broader shortlist is in best AI Word add-in.

PowerPoint: Claude for PowerPoint vs Copilot in PowerPoint

Both edit native slides in an existing deck. Claude reads the slide master, layouts, fonts and colours, edits specific slides without regenerating the deck, and turns bullets into native charts and diagrams. Copilot adds slides, reorganises sections and, for enterprise users, reformats a deck to a Brand Kit's colours, fonts and layouts; Microsoft notes that large or complex presentations may exceed system limits. The detailed PowerPoint comparison, including ChatGPT, is in ChatGPT vs Claude vs Copilot for PowerPoint, and Copilot on its own is in the Copilot for PowerPoint review.

Data access, security and admin controls

This is where most firms actually decide.

DeploymentUsers install from Microsoft Marketplace (AppSource), or admins deploy centrally in the Microsoft 365 admin center or by manifestLicence assignment; Cowork off by default
TrainingTeam and Enterprise (commercial): inputs and outputs not used for training by default (commercial). Pro, Max and Ultra (consumer): used only if the user allows it in settings, opts in or sends feedback, or for flagged safety review (consumer)Prompts, responses and Graph data are not used to train foundation models (Copilot privacy)

The training row matters for small firms: a consultant on a personal Pro plan is under Anthropic's consumer terms, so check the model-improvement setting before client files go in. Two warnings apply to both products. Anthropic tells you to use its add-ins only with trusted files, because documents can carry prompt injections that try to extract data or change records. Microsoft runs its own prompt-injection protections but says they depend on the scenario. In both, check what the agent did before you send anything.

Microsoft says "Charges apply only when usage-based experiences are used" and names Copilot Cowork among them; neither vendor publishes a typical monthly bill for agent work.

Run the same three tasks in both

Vendor pages tell you what a product can do, not how well it does it on your files. The kit gives both tools identical work and a way to score it. It has not yet been run in either tool: the answer key is computed from the files' own numbers, not from tool outputs, so treat the first runs as a calibration of the rubric too.

How to run it:

  1. Make two copies of each file. For Copilot, open them from OneDrive or SharePoint, as you normally would.
  2. Start a fresh chat per task, paste the prompt from the task sheet exactly, and answer clarifying questions without adding hints.
  3. Time each run until the file is something you would send to a client or partner, including your own fixes.
  4. Score accuracy, edits preserved, formatting kept and time to usable from 0 to 3 each (total out of 12), and record the minutes. Open the answer key only after scoring both tools.

What separates the results is rarely the first draft. Watch whether each tool notices the problems it was not told about (a number stored as text, a typed-over formula, a fee that doesn't reconcile), whether it leaves untouched cells, comments and slides alone, and whether the chart is still a chart afterwards.

What this comparison does not cover

  • Output quality: no task was run in either product, so there are no scores here.
  • Speed, usage limits in practice, and what Cowork costs per month for a real team.
  • Non-US pricing, data residency for Claude, and tenant-specific Copilot settings.
  • Features released after 1 November 2026.

How to choose

Your firm has Microsoft 365 E3 or E5 and a compliance team. Start with Copilot. Permissions, sensitivity labels, retention and audit work the way your admins already manage them, and Copilot Cowork gives you the Claude Cowork style of agent inside that boundary. If analysts ask for Claude, get sign-off on the data flow before a pilot.

You are a small consultancy on a Microsoft 365 Business plan. Price it per head: Copilot Business at $21 per user per month paid yearly ($18 if you buy under the promotion before 31 December 2026) on top of the plan you already have, against Claude Pro at $17 to $20 or Team Standard at $20 to $25 per seat. Then run the kit. If most of your value is in models and decks, Claude's cross-app context is the feature to test; if it is in email, meetings and shared files, Copilot's Graph grounding is.

You already pay for Claude. The add-ins come with every paid plan, so the incremental cost is zero. Install them from Microsoft Marketplace and run the kit before buying Copilot seats.

You want both. Copilot can use Anthropic models where your admin allows it, and Claude's add-ins and connector run inside a Microsoft 365 tenant, so one workable split is Copilot for mail, meetings and shared files, and Claude inside the models and decks.

Where a specialist add-in fits

Neither Claude nor Copilot is a consulting-slide toolkit. Both edit native slides and both document chart creation, but the Office documentation pages linked here (checked 1 November 2026) do not mention waterfall, Mekko or Gantt chart types, slide-production shortcuts or a library of consulting frameworks. That gap is what Deckary fills: a PowerPoint add-in that builds and edits consulting-style slides in your own template, with native editable charts, plus Excel and Word agents on the Premium plan ($19/month, or $15/month billed yearly; 14-day free trial, no card). If you already work in Claude, the Deckary MCP connector lets Claude create and edit Deckary decks and the PowerPoint, Excel and Word files you share from the add-in. See pricing for plans.

FAQ

Are Claude and Copilot the same?

No. Claude is Anthropic's assistant; Microsoft 365 Copilot is Microsoft's assistant built into Microsoft 365. They overlap in one place: Microsoft built Copilot Cowork on the technology behind Claude Cowork.

Does Microsoft Copilot use Claude?

Partly. Copilot Cowork is built on the technology behind Claude Cowork and, at general availability on 16 June 2026, ran on Anthropic models including Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 4.6. Admins can also allow Anthropic models elsewhere in Copilot as a subprocessor.

Is Claude better than Copilot for Excel?

Neither vendor's documentation settles it. Claude for Excel documents cell-level citations and formula-preserving edits; Copilot in Excel documents edit, plan and chat modes inside Microsoft 365 controls. Run the same workbook task in both.

How much do Claude and Copilot cost?

On 1 November 2026, Claude Pro cost $20 a month ($17 billed annually). Microsoft 365 Copilot Business cost $21 per user per month paid yearly ($18 under a first-year promotion ending 31 December 2026), on top of an eligible Microsoft 365 Business plan.
