What can an external AI agent do through Deckary's MCP server?

After you authorize it and turn on MCP in the Deckary add-in, an MCP-compatible agent can read the open presentation, workbook, or document, render exact Office images, and make validated edits one slide, one worksheet, or one bounded part of a document at a time. It can also inspect, render, and edit saved presentations in Deckary's Web Builder.

Can the MCP server edit an Office file that is open on my computer?

Yes, while the Deckary task pane for that file is open and its MCP toggle is on. Sharing is never remembered: a newly opened pane always starts with MCP off. Each live session ends when you turn MCP off, sign out, close the pane, or lose the connection. In Excel, overwriting non-empty cells must be requested explicitly; in Word, the agent can make its edits as tracked changes.

Does Deckary choose the model used by my external agent?

No. Your external agent owns its model, reasoning, and intent. Deckary supplies authenticated presentation tools, validates the authored changes, saves the canonical deck, and returns exact artifact state and slide renders.

How is access protected?

The remote MCP endpoint uses OAuth with separate saved-deck and live-document permissions. Live access also requires an explicit add-in sharing session for each file. Revision and artifact-version checks reject stale requests, and an uncertain write is never retried automatically.

Test and reviewer setup

The same endpoint covers saved Web Builder decks and live Office files, but each interface needs its own test fixture.

Saved Web Builder tools

Connect https://deckary.com/mcp and sign in with the test account supplied privately.
Make sure that account contains at least one saved Web Builder presentation with editable content.
Use list_decks to discover a deck. Read only the slides needed for the edit, and reuse the revision returned by the latest successful call.

Live Office tools

Install the Deckary add-in in PowerPoint, Excel, or Word and sign in with the same test account.
Open the supplied fixture, keep the Deckary task pane open, and turn on MCP sharing.
Use list_live_documents to discover or reconnect to a session. Read when target handles are missing, inspect only when exact object details are required, and treat a successful edit response as current state plus visual confirmation.

Troubleshoot the connection

Most failures come from an expired authorization, a closed live session, or presentation state that changed after the agent read it.

Sign-in keeps repeating

Remove the Deckary connector from the agent, connect https://deckary.com/mcp again, and complete OAuth with the intended Deckary account.

No presentations appear

Create or save a Web Builder deck. For a live Office file, sign in to the add-in with the same account, keep its task pane open, and turn on MCP sharing.

A version conflict is returned

The file changed after the agent read it. List or read it again, then retry once with the current revision or artifact version.

A live write has an unknown settlement

Do not retry it automatically. Reconnect if needed, read the live file first, and confirm whether the change was already applied.

Deckary limits each agent to your presentations

OAuth scopes account access. Deckary's authoring contract validates each presentation change before saving it.

OAuth access is scoped to the signed-in user's presentations and separated by artifact mode.
Every authored change passes the canonical Deckary presentation validator.
Revision checks reject stale writes instead of overwriting newer work.
Exact slide renders let the external agent inspect the committed pixels.
Live Office access requires the MCP toggle to be on in that file's add-in task pane, which always starts off.
Live authoring changes one slide, one worksheet, or a bounded part of a Word document per call; protected slide replacement remains unavailable.
The external agent uses its own model; the MCP server does not invoke Deckary AI.
