The best AI for Excel depends on the task. For changes to an open workbook, shortlist Deckary and Microsoft Copilot. For repeated classification or extraction across rows, consider Numerous.ai or GPT for Work. For a formula you will paste and inspect yourself, a formula assistant may be enough.

Do not compare a browser spreadsheet's price with an add-in's price before deciding whether your team can move the workbook. An exported .xlsx needs its own formula, formatting, and connection checks.

Choose by the Excel task#
Build or revise a live workbook#
Deckary's Excel agent reads ranges, writes formulas and output sheets, applies formatting, and inspects the result inside Excel. It is a relevant option when the deliverable is the workbook your team already uses. Native write protection and readback support review; they do not guarantee correct financial assumptions.
Copilot also belongs in this category. Microsoft's current documentation explicitly describes editing across sheets, building reports, and reviewing results, with edit, plan, and chat modes. Comparing it as a one-off formula helper would be inaccurate. Try the same bounded change in both products, including the approval and recovery steps. Microsoft's Excel capabilities.
Fill a column or explain one formula#
Numerous.ai's in-sheet functions suit repeated tasks such as categorizing feedback. GPT for Work now advertises both agent and bulk functions, so it should not be reduced to a formula-only product. Choose the smallest workflow that does the job. A formula explanation does not require handing over a whole workbook; a cross-sheet reconciliation needs more context than an isolated cell.
Analyze outside Excel#
Rows and Quadratic are separate working environments. Better Analyst and Ajelix offer broader analysis tooling. Consider these when the work starts from an exported dataset and the team can accept a different editor. Check the resulting workbook if someone must continue in Excel. A reproducible workbook example: find the missing revenue row#
Create a sheet named Sales and paste this table into A1:C4. These are fictional figures.

Enter Revenue in D1, then =B2*C2, =B3*C3, and =B4*C4 in D2:D4. Put Total revenue in A5 and the deliberately incomplete formula =SUM(D2:D3) in D5.
Ask your shortlisted agent:
Audit Sales!A1:D5 without changing the sheet. Check whether the revenue total includes every region. Explain the finding with cell references, calculate the expected total, and propose a repair. Wait for my approval before changing D5.
The expected finding is specific: D2 is 600, D3 is 600, and D4 is 400. D5 currently returns 1,200 because it omits West. The proposed repair is =SUM(D2:D4), which returns 1,600. After approving that repair, ask the agent to read D5 back and confirm both its formula and value.
This catches an error that does not produce #REF! or another visible Excel error. To evaluate scenario behavior, change B4 to 11: the repaired total should become 1,640. A pasted value of 1,600 would fail this check.

What a useful evaluation should record#

For a financial model, add balance-sheet and cash-flow checks specific to your model. An AI audit cannot prove that every business assumption is sensible.
