An AI slide generator is useful when it turns your material into slides you can keep editing. Start by choosing the output: an editable PowerPoint file, a Google Slides presentation, or a browser presentation that you share as a link.

From source figures to an editable slide
Try this fictional brief in your shortlisted tool:
Create a four-slide quarterly update for the sales director. Revenue: North €600,000 against €550,000 target; South €420,000 against €500,000; West €380,000 against €350,000. Use only these figures. Include an executive conclusion, an actual-versus-target chart by region, questions about South, and next actions with owner placeholders. Keep the chart and text editable. Do not invent explanations for the variance.
The expected arithmetic is:

An accurate action title is “Revenue met target overall; South's €80,000 gap offsets gains elsewhere.” A title claiming all regions are on plan is wrong. So is an invented claim that churn caused South's shortfall.

What “editable PowerPoint” should mean
Inspect individual objects in the exported file. Can you change the title as text? Can you change chart data? Is a diagram made from editable shapes, or is the whole slide one image? These are different levels of control.
For browser-created decks, export the file you will actually send. For add-ins, inspect the saved PowerPoint. Neither a .pptx extension nor a good preview proves that every object behaves as required.
Use a revision to expose the difference. Change South's actual revenue to €450,000 and ask for only the dependent chart, total, and conclusion to change. The new total is €1,430,000, €30,000 above target; South remains €50,000 below target. Check that unrelated slides remain unchanged.
Make the prompt specific enough to evaluate
Give the generator five things: audience, decision, source material, desired length, and output constraints. If research is permitted, say which claims need sources. If the supplied document is the only authority, say so.
A source-based prompt helps with PowerPoint citations. It does not guarantee that each number is correct. Trace important claims back to the input and check totals yourself.
Choose on the second draft
A useful shortlist produces a readable first deck, lets you revise one part, and leaves the recipient with a usable artifact. Measure the time you spend correcting content separately from formatting or export cleanup. This makes the comparison useful for your own workflow without pretending there is one winner for every presentation.
